Van Nuys sits in the Greater Los Angeles basin and San Fernando Valley, and the carpet here wears out differently than it does in wet parts of the country. We get 10-15 inches of rain a year. That means the soil tracked indoors is dry and abrasive, mostly mineral. Sandy loam, decomposed granite, road grit. It grinds into the pile instead of staining it, so what people call a dirty carpet here is usually traffic-lane wear and dull graying. The same dry air also means fast drying. Hot water extraction rarely leaves a musty smell in the Valley unless the unit is poorly ventilated or sits closer to the coast. Pollen loads climb from February through May with olive, sycamore, oak and ryegrass. Wildfire and Santa Ana events bring their own calls, and those never land on a schedule.

The calls we take most often follow the housing. Prewar bungalows and Spanish revival homes with hardwood and area rugs. Tract houses built between 1945 and 1965 with wall-to-wall over slab. 1970s and 80s stucco apartments and condos with builder-grade cut pile, usually on move-out turnover. Hillside and gated homes from the 1990s and 2000s with plush, Berber and stair runners. Pets are in most of these homes, and with year-round outdoor living the dogs are in and out all day. We show up with a truck-mounted unit, walk the rooms with you first, then pre-spray and agitate so the grit and oils release before anything gets rinsed. Then the extraction pass, slow and overlapping, heaviest on traffic lanes and stairs. Air movers go down on the damp areas before we leave. We work on Shaw, Mohawk, Karastan, Stainmaster, Anderson Tuftex and Masland, and we adjust heat and solution to the fiber rather than running one setting on everything.

Steam carpet cleaning is the right call for most synthetic wall-to-wall, because mineral soil needs flushing, not surface buffing. Low-moisture methods make more sense for wool, delicate rugs, or an occupied apartment that has to be walkable in an hour. Upholstery cleaning gets its own tools and gentler chemistry. When the damage is a seam, a pet tear or a burn, cleaning will not fix it and we say so. That is a carpet repair job. Same honesty on stains. Old bleach spots, dye transfer and some pet urine that has reached the pad will not come out, and we tell you that before we start instead of after you have paid. Estimates are free.
